Numerous research facilities, labs, and academic staff from various university departments are housed within the Beckman Institute. For multidisciplinary research in fields including neurology, imaging, materials science, bioengineering, artificial intelligence, and human-computer interaction, it offers researchers cutting-edge facilities and resources.
Beckman Institute Postdoctoral Fellowship Programs
The Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign offers several postdoctoral fellowship programs to support researchers in conducting interdisciplinary research in various fields. The Beckman Institute’s three postdoctoral fellowship programs give researchers a one-of-a-kind chance to conduct multidisciplinary research there for three years each year.
1. The Beckman Institute Postdoctoral Fellows Program
Each year, four to six outstanding scientists are hired by the Beckman Institute Postdoctoral Fellows Programme to work there. In 1991, the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation launched the initiative.
2. The Beckman-Brown Interdisciplinary Postdoctoral Fellows Program
One exceptional researcher is chosen each year by the Beckman-Brown Interdisciplinary Postdoctoral Fellows Programme. When the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation donated an endowment in memory of Dr. and Mrs. Arnold Beckman and Dr. Theodore ‘Ted’ Brown, the founding director of the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology, the program was launched in the autumn of 2015.
3. The Cancer Center at Illinois – Beckman Institute Postdoctoral Fellows Program
The Cancer Centre at Illinois – Beckman Institute Postdoctoral Fellows Programme provides funding for up to two fellows to work on projects that combine engineering and fundamental cancer research. The Beckman Institute and CCIL faculty mentors who work with the fellows help them build cross-disciplinary abilities that will help them advance their careers.
Benefits of Beckman Institute Postdoctoral Fellowship Programs
Prestigious Beckman Institute Postdoctoral Fellowship Programs offered by the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign provide several benefits to postdoctoral researchers, including:
The Beckman Institute Postdoctoral Fellowship is funded by a one-time $25,000 research budget and an annual salary starting at $63,000.
- Relocation costs ($2,000 maximum, just for the first year)

Vacation and Sick Leaves
Each appointment year, full-time postdoctoral research associates are given 24 vacation days, 12 cumulative sick days, and 13 non-cumulative sick days.
Beckman Institute postdoctoral fellows may be qualified for University of Illinois health insurance benefits through the state of Illinois because they are employed as postdoctoral research associates. Benefits eligibility for visa holders is dependent upon passing the substantial presence test and finding out, following a meeting with the university payroll office, whether you are regarded as a resident for tax purposes.
A postdoctoral fellowship is a type of job (sometimes known as a postdoctoral research associate). In the event that a candidate is chosen for the Beckman Institute Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme and qualifies for such sponsorship, the Beckman Institute will sponsor the applicant for an H-1B or J-1 visa. Send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org if you would like additional information about the H-1B visa.
- Ph.D. or an equivalent degree earned during the last ten years or before beginning a postdoctoral fellow appointment, you must complete your program.
- The suggested research plan’s applicability to the Beckman Institute’s portfolio.
- Four reference letters are included in the application package:
- Two letters addressing the applicant’s previous employment
- Two letters from the suggested Beckman Institute faculty mentors or colleagues, at least one of whom must be a full- or part-time faculty member.
- In their letters, potential Beckman Institute faculty mentors and collaborators should outline how they aim to assist the applicant’s research strategy.
The application deadline is Monday, November 20, 2023, at 5 p.m. CST.
In the fall of 2023, applications for the 2024 Beckman Institute Postdoctoral Fellowship Programmes will be accepted.
1. Fill out the application form
The online application form must be completed by applicants. The form also enables you to submit your supporting materials, such as a curriculum vitae, research plan, and sample paper, electronically.
2. Curriculum vitae
The curriculum vitae needs to be uploaded with the application form as an Adobe PDF document, as stated above.
3. Research and development plan
Upload a single PDF file including your plan and references. Your plan should be formatted as stated below and be no more than five pages long, not including the bibliography or list of references.
4. Representative paper
If you’ve already published, simply submit one piece. If you haven’t published yet, send in one of your introductory or sample chapters. A five-page expanded abstract of your dissertation may be used in its place.
5. Reference letters
Names, contact information, email addresses, and phone numbers for your four references, which should include two people who can write letters of recommendation regarding your prior employment and two Illinois faculty members who will serve as your mentors and collaborators while you are an intern at Beckman.
