Criteria for Liber Ero Postdoctoral Fellowship Program
- Eligible scholars will be scientists in the natural or social sciences.
- Must have obtained a PhD degree before the start of the fellowship.
- Applicants should propose to be based in a Canadian conservation or academic institution and conduct their research primarily in Canada.
- Canadian citizenship is not required – researchers from any country can apply.
- Applicants will designate a mentoring team consisting of at least one academic mentor and at least one mentor from practice in the field of nature conservation.
- Applicants are encouraged to identify a team of mentors at the outset of their proposal to foster meaningful collaboration.
- The quality and suitability of the mentoring team* will also be a key consideration, and the proposal should highlight how the team will work together to address the conservation issue.
- Research projects may draw on natural, social, or multidisciplinary theories and methods to address the conservation issues under study.

Liber Ero Postdoctoral Fellowship Coverage
The Liber Ero Postdoctoral Fellowship will last two years (the second year is contingent on satisfactory progress), with a stipend of $70,000 and a travel and research budget of $15,000.
It is important to note that the Liber Ero Fellowship is not considered an employer of postdoctoral fellows and does not cover the employer portion of benefits if the host institution’s policy is to classify fellows as employees. We recommend that applicants discuss potential funding sources for the employer portion with their potential primary mentor in advance (sources vary by the host organization and may include institutional support, mentor funding, and employee contributions).

Every year in August/September, Liber Ero Postdoctoral Fellowship applications for the following year’s cohort open on the official website. The deadline for applications is always November 1.

Required Documents
The following are the main components of the Liber Ero Postdoctoral Fellowship application. First, register your application, then compile and submit the following as a PDF:
- Cover letter (maximum of one page) – A brief cover letter is required, which should not repeat information from the application. Rather, it should be a compilation of your previous accomplishments that tells us more about you and your goals.
- Research proposal (maximum four pages) – Research proposals must demonstrate the candidate’s ability to identify a key conservation problem confronting the natural world and describe how the proposed work will contribute to its resolution. The proposal is free-form and can be structured however you see fit, but it must include the project Name
- Conservation Issue: A successful application must clearly define the conservation issue that will be addressed in Canada and how the scholarship will contribute to solving the problem beyond simply studying the conservation issue.
- Methods: A one-page section describing the methods and approaches to be used and any new approaches to be developed.
- Mentoring: A section that explains how the applicant and mentoring team intend to collaborate to effect real-world change in relation to the stated conservation issue.
- Impact: The section must describe the proposed research’s potential impact and identify the communities that will benefit the most from the findings.
- References: Additional pages for cited literature may be included besides the four-page limit.
- A statement outlining previous accomplishments demonstrating the candidate’s dedication to conservation science, outreach, and collaboration (maximum 500 words).
- A Diversity Statement describing the applicant’s past and/or future commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity through research, teaching, service, outreach, or other activities (maximum 250 words).
- A copy of the applicant’s curriculum vitae, including relevant publications, grants, and experience.
- A minimum of two letters of support from proposed academic and conservation mentors. If there are multiple academic mentors, a joint letter is preferred if possible (as well as in cases involving multiple conservation practice mentors).
- Letters of recommendation from two referees who are familiar with your conservation research and leadership abilities (these should be sent directly to info@liberero.ca by your referees; do not include them in your pdf). Please request these letters as soon as possible to ensure they are sent and delivered by our deadline!
