The Hurford Youth Fellowship is a program that offers young activists and leaders from all over the world the chance to develop their abilities, connect with others who share their values, and help advance democracy and human rights. The World Movement for Democracy, a network of activists, professionals, and academics working to assist the growth of democracies worldwide, is responsible for organizing the fellowship.

Individuals who are actively interested in advancing democracy and human rights in their respective countries and are 30 years of age or younger are eligible for the Hurford Youth Fellowship. Fellows are based in the World Movement Secretariat in Washington, D.C., for the duration of the fellowship program, which normally lasts four months.

Hurford Youth Fellowship Coverage

Additionally to receiving a monthly stipend for living expenses, each fellow will also be provided with basic health insurance and roundtrip transportation to and from Washington, D.C. The cost of living in Washington, D.C. is taken into account for stipends. The office is fully furnished, with internet and email access, and the fellows are given a small stipend for long-distance calls relating to their fellowship.

Participants engage in a range of activities and initiatives throughout the fellowship with the goal of improving their knowledge, skills, and capacity to advance democratic principles. The opportunities available to fellows include conducting research, creating advocacy campaigns, writing articles, and taking part in a variety of workshops and events pertaining to democracy and human rights.

Hurford Youth Fellowship Eligibility

To apply for the Hurford Youth Fellowship, candidates must fulfill the following criteria:

  • The Hurford Youth Fellows Programme only accepts applicants who are under 30 years old.
  • They must exhibit a strong commitment to political activism and the expansion of democracy in their local communities and around the world.
  • Applications from young people connected to civil society organizations are especially encouraged.
  • For purposes of general communication, participation in the program requires a working knowledge of English. The language of all application documents must be English.

Commencing on June 1, 2023, accept applications for the Hurford Youth Fellowship. Applications must be received by July 31, 2023, to be considered.

Application Process

Typically, a thorough application form, including essays and references, must be submitted in order to be considered for the Hurford Youth Fellowship. Considering the potential impact of the fellows’ activities as well as their demonstrated dedication to democracy and human rights, the World Movement for Democracy evaluates the applications and chooses a group of fellows.

The following materials are required of applicants:

  • an application form,
  • a resume or curriculum vitae,
  • and two letters of recommendation.

The application form is divided into four sections: two letters of recommendation, a project proposal, a curriculum vitae, and personal information. Each applicant must fully fill out the Form.

The most crucial component of your fellowship application is your project proposal. It should be easy to understand by people who are not experts in your field or area of emphasis. Your suggestion must fall within one of the following Youth Declaration action areas:

  • Increasing Young People’s Civic Space,
  • Combating Misinformation,
  • Creating Citizen-Centric Accountability,
  • and Delivering Democracy
