Young scientists from developing nations have a great chance to improve their research abilities, get exposure to other countries, and collaborate with Indian scientists thanks to the TWAS-CSIR Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme.

  • TWAS-CSIR Postdoctoral Fellowships can be held for a minimum of six months and a maximum of twelve months in CSIR research laboratories and institutes throughout India.
  • CSIR institutes that qualify: The list of acceptable institutions can be found here.
  • A monthly stipend will be provided by CSIR to cover living expenses, food expenses, and health insurance. There will be no currency exchange for the monthly payment. Fellowship recipients also have the right to discounted housing.
  • English is the medium of instruction for international academics in CSIR laboratories and institutes.

Financial Assistance

Fellows are provided with a monthly stipend to help with living costs, housing, and health insurance. The CSIR institutes offer lab space and other necessities for research.

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates for these fellowships must fulfill the requirements listed below:

  • be no older than 45 years old on December 31 of the application year.
  • be citizens of underdeveloped nations, excluding India.
  • own a PhD in a science or technology-related discipline.
  • cannot be in possession of a visa for either temporary or permanent residence in India or any other developed nation.
  • hold a research assignment and be employed on a regular basis in a developing nation.
  • possess a formal acceptance letter from the host institution (see sample Acceptance Letter that can be downloaded below or included in the application form) and be accepted at the CSIR laboratory/institute. N.B. Requests for acceptance must go to the CSIR host institution(s) of choice, with a copy going to the CSIR contact person. This will enable CSIR to keep track of requests and, if necessary, provide support or assistance in locating suitable host institution(s);
  • if English was not your primary language of instruction, you must demonstrate your English ability;
  • give proof that the applicant will return to their place of origin after the fellowship is over;
  • not take on additional tasks while receiving the fellowship;
  • be liable for the support of any accompanying family members financially.

*Please be aware that applicants are limited to one TWAS and OWSD portfolio program application per calendar year. In that year, applicants are ineligible to participate in the TWAS Visiting Professor programs at any other institution. One exception: The institution’s head may still apply for another program even if he or she asks an outside researcher to offer their expertise as part of the TWAS Visiting Professor programs.

TWAS-CSIR Postdoctoral Fellowship Program Application Process

When applying, or at the latest by the deadline, candidates must submit the Acceptance Letter from a CSIR institution to CSIR and TWAS. The preliminary acceptance letter application process should be started as soon as feasible, even before the call opens. Keep in mind that applications are only accepted for letters of acceptance dated in the same year as the application.

TWAS-CSIR Postdoctoral Fellowship Program Timeline

The deadline for this fellowship is September 15, 2023. Selected candidates would be allowed to begin their fellowships no earlier than mid-2024 when the selection results are made public in early 2024.
