Each academic year, Maastricht University’s UM Holland High Potential Scholarship program awards 24 full scholarships worth € 30,000 (including a waiver of tuition costs and a monthly stipend) to exceptionally gifted students from outside the European Union (EU) who have been admitted to UM’s master’s programs.
The UM Holland High Potential scholarship program consists of two types of awards: the High Potential Scholarship, which is supported by the Maastricht University Scholarship Fund, and the Holland Scholarship, which is supported by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science in collaboration with Dutch universities and universities of applied sciences. It is intended for foreign students from outside the EU/EEA who want to pursue a full degree program in the Netherlands.

Eligibility Criteria for UM Holland High Potential Scholarship Program
The following requirements for UM Holland High Potential scholarship program must be met by all applicants:
- You should be a non-EU/EEA national.
- You don’t hold a degree from a Dutch educational institution.
- You meet the requirements for getting an entry visa and residence permit for the Netherlands and have nationality from a nation outside the EU/EEA, Switzerland, or Surinam.
- You do not possess dual citizenship with an EU/EEA country.
- You have submitted an application for admission to Maastricht University’s full-time participating master’s program (the participating programs will be listed in October 2024) for the 2025-2026 academic year.
- You are eligible for admission to the particular UM master’s program to which you have applied.
- You have never taken part in a higher education program in the Netherlands that leads to a degree. The application process is open to students who have participated in exchange programs in the Netherlands.
- On September 1, 2024, you will not be older than 35.
- Your most recent grade transcript or proof of academic brilliance shows that you had exceptional results in your previous educational endeavors. If multiple applicants are equally qualified, UM will give precedence to those whose academic records or letters of recommendation certifying their academic performance show they are among the top 5% of applicants for the 2025-2026 scholarship program.
Application deadline
The UM Holland High Potential scholarship program applications for the academic year 2025-2026 will open in October 2024. Up to and including February 1, 2025, 23:59 CET, is the application deadline.

Proof of academic excellence
To demonstrate your superior academic standing, you may upload one of the following documents:
- Your official university transcript, which clearly states your grade point average or class standing (such as first-class honors) for your entire study program;
- A letter from the head of your institution’s department or the registrar stating that you are among the top 20 students in the study program’s graduating year. Please be careful to include your department’s head of department or registrar’s contact information in the letter.
Personal statement of financial needs.
Describe your circumstances, such as financial hardship, being a solo parent or having caregiving obligations, a medical condition, a disability, being a refugee, etc., and explain why you might benefit from receiving a scholarship.

A reference letter.
Please send the sample scholarship reference letter guidelines to your referee so they may create a strong letter of recommendation on your behalf. Please be aware that referees cannot be relatives; they must be current or past professors, lecturers, or employers. Letters of recommendation are to be signed, dated, and completed no sooner than February 2024.

The contact details of one referee
Please be aware that we may get in touch with your referee to verify their legitimacy. Therefore, be careful to follow these procedures when selecting a referee and providing their contact information:
- Relationship to the applicant; specify the relationship between you and your referee. Is this your employer, thesis advisor, or professor? Please keep in mind that relatives often cannot serve as referees.
- The referee’s office phone number; remember to add the appropriate international dialing code.
- The referee’s email address, either personal or professional. Any letters that just include a personal email address will be ignored.

UM Holland High Potential Scholarship Program Application Procedure
Candidates must first submit an application for admission to Maastricht University’s master’s program in order to be considered for the scholarship. Candidates must complete a separate scholarship application process and provide extra materials, including a motivational letter and references. Candidates have to follow the following two steps:

Apply to one of the master’s programs at UM that are participating (the programs that are participating will be listed in October 2024).

Visit the website for the program you are interested in for more information on how to apply for a master’s degree at UM. You will obtain a student ID number at UM once you have submitted your application through Studielink. For the Scholarship Application Form (see Step 2 below), you will require a student number in order to complete and submit it.
- Only the master’s degree programs on the above list qualify for UM Holland-High Potential Scholarships.
- You first have to apply for the master’s program at UM to receive your student ID, as soon as you have your student ID you can apply for the scholarship. Then, and only then, can you apply for the scholarship. To be given a scholarship, however, you must have your admission to your master’s program conditionally authorized.
- The UM International Services Desk does not reimburse handling fees if paying a handling charge is a requirement of your study program in order to complete the admissions process. Any handling fee that your program may charge is your responsibility and must be paid by 1 February 2024.
