Eligibility Criteria

Graduate assistants need to be accepted into graduate programs that allow the student to receive a waiver of university tuition for enrolled students.

  • Graduate assistants must maintain good academic standing in their degree program and have a minimum GPA of 2.75.
  • Graduate assistantships are not available to non-degree-granting students.
  • Assistantships are only permitted for provisional graduate students with their Associate Dean’s consent.
  • Graduate assistants are limited to holding one assistantship in its entirety.
  • A student cannot be awarded a fellowship in addition to an assistantship.
  • Non-English speaking graduate teaching assistants are required to pass the TrueNorth Test.

Make sure your graduate school accepts GA tuition waivers in order to guarantee that your university tuition is covered. If tuition exemptions are not available for your program, an assistantship cannot be awarded. Under these circumstances, you may be able to get employment as a student worker rather than an assistantship.
