Benefits of Austrian University of Applied Sciences Ernst Mach Grant

The following are the benefits of the Austrian University of Applied Sciences Ernst Mach Grant:

  1. A monthly grant rate of EUR 1,150
  2. Assistance in arranging accommodation and health insurance
    1. For OeAD(Agency for Education and Internationalisation) scholarship holders, it is possible to reserve accommodation (dormitory or apartment) with OeAD student housing. The monthly costs are:
      • monthly rent: approximately 250 to 600 EUR (depending on equipment)
      • monthly administrative fee: currently EUR 21
    2. OeAD scholarship holders must have health insurance accepted by the Austrian authorities during their stay in Austria. OeAD can help with the conclusion of such insurance. Monthly costs may vary, at this point, you should expect between €55 and €200 (depending on your age, scholarship category and health status). Scholarship holders must pay for accommodation and insurance themselves.
    3. Applicants from non-EU/EEA countries planning a research stay of more than 6 months: If your monthly accommodation costs in Austria exceed EUR 300, you may need to present proof of additional funds to the Austrian Residence Authority when you apply for a permit to stay. This amount may vary depending on your health insurance costs and other obligations.
  3. Grant holders do not have to pay tuition fees in Austria. They may need to apply to the Rectorate of their respective host university and demonstrate that they are studying or doing research within EU transnational, national, or university mobility programs.
  4. Scholars from non-European developing countries will also receive an allowance for travel costs of a maximum of EUR 1,000.

Criteria for an Austrian University of Applied Sciences Ernst Mach Grant

Grants are only awarded for studies at universities of applied sciences (Fachhochschulen), where the Federal Ministry of Education, Science, and Research (BMBWF) bears most of the costs of the study place.

The candidates can apply if they fulfill the following criteria;

  • Studying a master’s program at a university in one of the above-mentioned countries of origin or
  • Studying a bachelor’s program at a university in one of the above-mentioned countries of origin and having successfully completed at least 4 semesters of study by the time of receiving the scholarship.
  • Maximum age: 35 years
  • Applicants must not have studied/conducted research/academic work in Austria in the last six months before receiving the grant.
  • Language skills: Very good knowledge of English and/or German

Moreover

  • Once an application is rejected, it will not be considered further under this call. However, it is possible to apply for this grant again in the future with an amended application.
  • The number of grants that will be awarded during one call depends on the quota and/or available budget.
  • Applicants can apply for several grants at the same time.
  • The selection process for all grants is competitive, meaning that there is no legal claim to the grant, even if all the application requirements are met.

Document Requirement for an Austrian University of Applied Sciences Ernst Mach Grant

The following documents must be uploaded with the online application:

  • Two letters of recommendation from university lecturers. No special form is required for these letters of recommendation; it must contain
    • the letterhead,
    • the date, and signature of the person recommending the applicant,
    • and the stamp of the university/department
    • and must not be older than six months at the time of application.
  • Confirmation from the home university that the exams taken in Austria will be recognized by the home university (e.g. study contract).
  • Confirmation of acceptance as an exchange student or free mover from the University of Applied Sciences (Fachhochschule).
  • Scan of passport (name and photo page).
  • Scan of the current transcript of records.
