The Griffith University Postgraduate Research Scholarship (GUPRS) is open to potential candidates during the University’s annual cycle of applications for Ph.D. and research degree scholarships.

Griffith University

Griffith University is a public research university in South East Queensland, on Australia’s east coast. Founded in 1971, Griffith University made its debut in 1975, providing Australia’s first degrees in Asian studies and environmental science. The university has five campuses: Gold Coast, Nathan, South Bank, Mount Gravatt, and Logan.

A lush university that is a member of IRU, Griffith University enrolls about 50,000 students annually from over 130 different nations. According to the 2021 Student Experience Survey[6], it has the ninth-highest ranking for student happiness among all Australian universities, and since 2012, it has earned more Australian Awards for University Teaching than any other Australian university.

Benefits of Griffith University Postgraduate Research Scholarship

The following are the benefits of the Griffith University Postgraduate Research Scholarship:

  • A full-time GUPRS receives an annual stipend of $33,480 (2024 rate). The stipend rate for a certain year may be the same as it was for the previous year due to the annual index.
  • The awardee is entitled to a maximum of $515 for each eligible adult and $255 for each eligible child, up to an absolute maximum of $1,485 for those who must relocate—either within Australia or from abroad—in order to participate in the program and accept the award, as long as they can show the GGRS receipts attesting to the costs of this travel.
  • Among the leave options are sick, partner, recreational, and other leaves.

Eligibility

  1. To be qualified for a GUPRS, an applicant must:
    • be starting or enrolled in a Griffith University HDR program (for which GUPRS support is provided).
    • not be getting funding from any other source to help with the candidate’s living expenses, which should not exceed 75% of the GUPRS stipend rate in order to carry out the suggested program. Recipients of money unrelated to the candidate’s HDR program or revenue obtained for the candidate’s HDR program but not intended to support regular living expenditures are not to be taken into account.
  2. To be eligible for a GUPRS, a candidate needs to:
    • either hold a Bachelor’s Degree (AQF 8) with First Class Honours (Class I) or be deemed by Griffith University to have achieved a comparable level of achievement, as indicated on the relevant qualifications for the HDR program entrance webpage.
    • not completed a degree that surpasses or is comparable to the HDR program the candidate is beginning or enrolling in.
    • You cannot have completed more than 12 months (or the equivalent full-time) of candidacy at Griffith University or any other Australian or foreign university if you are seeking recognition for a previous HDR program candidature.
    • have not previously held the same or a similar scholarship, unless it was terminated within the first six months of receiving funding; it was awarded for a degree at a lower level than the applicant is applying for; or the applicant is asking to transfer the scholarship (refer to Section 3.6 of the HDR Scholarship Procedure).
    • have not received a Commonwealth Government Australia Award scholarship during the two years prior to the commencement of the award, unless this plan has been authorized by the appropriate Commonwealth Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade division.

Criteria

  • Academic Excellence: Scholarships are usually awarded to candidates having a strong academic background, which is frequently demonstrated by outstanding grades from previous degrees, such as a bachelor’s or master’s degree.
  • Research plan: A strong research plan is usually required to showcase a candidate’s research interests, methodologies, and potential effect on the area.
  • English proficiency: International students usually have to prove their English proficiency through tests like the TOEFL or IELTS, unless they have previously obtained a degree in an English-speaking country.
  • Fulfilling Admission Requirements: To be admitted to Griffith University’s specific research degree program, applicants must fulfill the requirements.

While you can apply for scholarships at any time, it is recommended that you do so at least four months before the intake you wish to attend in order to allow adequate time for your application to be reviewed and for your offer letter to be issued and accepted.
