The nondenominational Lakehead University, also known as “Lakehead U,” is funded by the province. The Lakehead University may provide the following examples of overseas scholarships:

1. Lakehead University Presidential Scholarship

The highest level of academic recognition and assistance provided by the university is represented by the Lakehead University Presidential Scholarship. Designed for outstanding students who exhibit remarkable academic performance, leadership potential, and community service, this esteemed scholarship personifies Lakehead University’s dedication to developing talent and promoting success.

Benefits of the Lakehead University Presidential Scholarship

The recipient of the Lakehead University Presidential Scholarship may keep it for up to four years, or until they receive their first degree, whichever comes first. For the remainder of the scholarship term, you will receive an updated scholarship of $2,500 each year for each academic year and your university academic average is between 80.0% and 84.9%. Your scholarship value will be prorated if you complete 80% but less than 100% of the required courses for your program and year level.

Application Process

Send an email to awards.safa@lakeheadu.ca with the subject line “PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION- LASTNAME, First Name” that contains all supporting documentation, including reference letters. April 25, 2024, is the last date to apply for Lakehead University Presidential Scholarship.

2. International Undergraduate Entrance Scholarships

The Undergraduate Entrance Scholarships are open to non-Canadian nationals who are transferring from an overseas college or university, or who are entering Lakehead University straight out of high school. The best overseas applicants to Lakehead University in 2024–2025 are eligible for the award.

Benefits of International Undergraduate Entrance Scholarships

The maximum value of the scholarship is $10,000/year ($40,000 for 4 years in total).

Application Process

Candidates for this scholarship are automatically considered based on their academic accomplishments. Lakehead University makes sure that worthy students are recognized and awarded for their exceptional merit from the beginning of their academic path by eliminating the obstacle of a scholarship application.

3. International Graduate Scholarships

Graduate students at Lakehead University have access to funding options through a range of scholarships, bursaries, and awards. There are two types of International Graduate Scholarships:

I. Graduate Assistantships

Some full-time graduate students (including those on visas) may be eligible for Graduate Assistant posts, which are available at $10,506.69 for Master’s level positions and $11,457.79 for Doctoral positions. During the Fall and Winter terms, a regular appointment can result in up to 270 hours of labor or an average of no more than 10 hours each week.

II. Faculty Research Awards for Graduate Students

A Faculty Research Award could also be given to some graduate students. A full-time degree applicant may be eligible to receive this stipend for academic or research activities that are pertinent to and associated with their field(s) of study within the academic program. Awards for Faculty Research are given out by the student’s advisor.

4. International Entrance Scholarships & International Visionary Award

Undergraduate Entrance Scholarships will be given consideration to non-Canadian citizens transferring from international colleges or universities or joining Lakehead-Georgian after finishing high school. The best international applicants to Lakehead-Georgian for are eligible for the scholarship.

Benefits

International Lakehead-Georgian students beginning in Fall 2024 are eligible for the $4,000 International Visionary Award in addition to the admission grants (which are awarded based on academic merit):

  • “$10,000 x four years”. Renewable as long as each academic year’s average is 90.0%. For the remainder of the scholarship term, a student will get an adjusted scholarship worth $7,500 CAD per year for each academic year after that if their university academic average is between 80.0 and 89.9%.
  • “$7,500 x four years”. Renewable as long as each academic year’s average is at least 80%.
