MIF Research Fellowship

Most likely, the Mitsubishi Innovation Foundation (MIF) Research Fellowship Program is meant to be referred to as the MIF Research Fellowship Program. The Mitsubishi Group, a group of Japanese corporations, founded the Mitsubishi Innovation Foundation as a philanthropic endeavor.

Benefits of the MIF Research Fellowship Program

The following are the benefits of the MIF Research Fellowship Program:

  • Monthly Allowance
    • A monthly grant of JPY 220,000 is given to cover living expenses in Japan as well as costs associated with research activities (including materials).
  • Arrival Fund
    • A JPY 120,000 Arrival Fund is given to help with some of the upfront living expenses in Japan.
  • Round-trip Air Transportation
    • The grantee’s home airport and Tokyo, Japan are the closest international airports for round-trip economy class travel.
  • Insurance
    • Travel insurance covers medical expenses and provides death benefits while abroad.
  • Study Visit
    • In order to broaden their understanding of Japan, the MIF encourages fellowship winners to take part in a study tour while they are receiving funding.

Eligibility Criteria

You can apply for the MIF Research Fellowship Program if you fulfill the following criteria:

  • Applications from non-Japanese nationals may be submitted as long as they fulfill all the prerequisites.
  • Candidates who share the MIF’s basic principles.
  • Before applying, candidates must get an acceptance from the host university in Japan.
  • Those applying must be Ph.D. holders.
    The age requirement for applicants is 45 years of age or under at the time of application. (The birth year has to fall within or follow 1979.)
  • Candidates must be proficient in either Japanese or English.
  • Candidates should not have any prior or ongoing experience traveling to Japan. (Apart from brief visits for conferences or sightseeing)
  • Applicants must be employed in their home countries, return there after the fellowship period, and make contributions to the advancement of their own nations.

Host Institute

In order to conduct their research, applicants are allowed to select any host institution in Japan, including universities, national research institutes, or comparable private sector facilities.

April 1, 2024, to June 30, 2024 (Japan Standard Time) is the application period. Applications submitted earlier or after the application deadline will not be accepted for any reason.
