Fully Funded PhD Scholarships sponsor up to fifty students or scholars from developing countries to study in China for doctoral degrees for up to four years under an agreement between the Alliance of International Science Organizations (ANSO), the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS/UNESCO) for the advancement of science in developing countries. The funding for this PhD program is entirely provided.

This year marks the official debut of the ANSO-CAS-TWAS/UNESCO PhD Scholarship, a subcategory of the ANSO Scholarship. In accordance with TWAS/UNESCO priorities, the two target groups—women and least developed nations, or LDCs—will receive particular (but exclusive) care. Up to 50 PhD candidates from developing South American countries will be selected annually for this category by TWAS/UNESCO.

The ANSO Scholarship is mostly funded by CAS, a well-known ANSO founding member. Two of ANSO’s founding members, TWAS and UNESCO, provide partial funding to the beneficiaries of the ANSO-CAS-TWAS/UNESCO PhD Scholarship. USTC
In 1958, the Chinese Academy of Sciences established USTC as its first university. This comprehensive university offers courses in science, engineering, management, and the humanities and focuses on cutting-edge research and cutting-edge innovations. USTC took the lead in launching the Graduate School, the School of Gifted Young, important national scientific initiatives, etc. As a result of its current standing as a highly regarded Chinese university with an excellent international reputation, it is included in the China 9 Consortium, which is composed of China’s top 9 institutions. A prominent center for innovation in China, USTC is referred to as “the Cradle of Scientific Elites.” USTC offers graduate and undergraduate programs.
UCAS
The University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, or UCAS, is a state-of-the-art facility that integrates teaching and scientific research, places a strong emphasis on graduate studies, and provides top-notch undergraduate education. Its predecessor was the Chinese Academy of Sciences Graduate University, established in 1978. The largest graduate school in China, UCAS, has over 50,000 students enrolled, more than half of them are PhD candidates. UCAS has the authority to issue ninety percent of all degrees in the engineering fields and all master’s and doctoral degrees in the scientific fields.
UNESCO-TWAS
The World Academy of Sciences for the Advancement of Science in Developing Countries (UNESCO-TWAS) seeks to advance scientific excellence and sustainable prosperity in the global South by, among other things, developing science policies, funding research projects, providing education and training, and elevating the status of science diplomacy.
Benefits of Fully Funded PhD Scholarships in China
The following are the benefits of the Fully Funded PhD Scholarships in China
- Tuition waiver
- Monthly stipend: up to 48 months at 6,000 or 7,000 CNY per month (according on whether the recipient passed the University-conducted qualification exam).
- Health insurance
- Application fee waiver
- Allowance for international travel from the recipient’s home nation to China (one journey per selected candidate)
- One-time visa
Criteria
The ANSO-CAS-TWAS/UNESCO PhD Scholarship applicants should meet the following criteria:
- Candidates should not be Chinese nationals to be eligible;
- Candidates must be citizens of developing countries in South Africa that fulfill the prerequisites (Developing Countries in the South | TWAS).
- Candidates must be fluent in either Chinese or English.
- Applicants to PhD programs must be born on or after January 1, 1989, inclusive.
- Qualified candidates must meet the prerequisites for admission to USTC/UCAS for international students.
- Those who are eligible should abstain from taking on extra obligations while they are earning their scholarship.
- If the candidate is currently enrolled in a doctoral program at any Chinese university or institution, they will not be eligible for the PhD program of this grant. If not, the applicant will not be granted admission, and the current college or organization will be informed of the circumstances.

Deadline
The ANSO-CAS-TWAS/UNESCO PhD Scholarship will close on February 15, 2024.
Application Procedure
Complete the following steps to apply for the ANSO-CAS-TWAS/UNESCO PhD Scholarship:
- Before the deadline, complete and submit your application via the USTC/UCAS admission portal as instructed.
- Make sure you choose “the ANSO Scholarship for Young Talents” first when submitting your application.
- Secondly, to be considered as a potential applicant for the ANSO-CAS-TWAS/UNESCO PhD Scholarship, you need to check the box in the application system as instructed.
