George Mason University
Located in Fairfax County, Virginia, close to Washington, D.C., George Mason University is a public research institution. There are four campuses of the institution in Virginia: Fairfax, Arlington, Front Royal, and Prince William Counties. It also runs a global campus in Incheon, South Korea, and a retreat and conference center in Lorton. The institution is categorized as “R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity.” George Mason University produced two professors who were honored with the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics: James M. Buchanan in 1986 and Vernon L. Smith in 2002.

Mercatus Center MA Fellowship Program financial benefits include over the course of two years, the maximum reward of $80,000 that consists of:
- a monthly allowance
- full tuition assistance (semester average of nine credits)

MA Fellows can also get financing from the following additional sources:
Funds are available from Academic & Student Programs to support fellows who are attending and presenting at academic conferences and to assist fellows in conducting research. In order to be given full consideration, funding requests must be received 60 days before the conference or the conduct of research. Reimbursement of qualified costs serves as the source of funding.
Mercatus Center MA Fellowship Criteria
All fellows must complete George Mason University courses leading to an MA in economics. They are also encouraged to enroll in electives that will expand their knowledge of conducting and communicating economic analyses of public policy challenges.
You have to be one of the following to be eligible for the Mercatus Center MA Fellowship Program:
- Enrolled in Mason’s MA in Economics program
- Applying to Mason’s Master of Arts in Economics program
If you haven’t enrolled in Mason’s MA in Economics program yet, please fill out the regular application for autumn admission and specify that you want to be considered for financial aid.
Documents/Material Required to Apply
Mercatus Center MA Fellowship Program online application includes:
- A current resume/CV
- A 1-2 page cover letter explaining:
- Your research interests and current projects,
- Your familiarity with Mason and Mercatus scholars and their research,
- What do you hope to get out of the program?
- A 500-1000 word essay on “Why do some societies prosper, while others remain stagnant and poor?”
- A 10-page writing sample that demonstrates your writing and research skills
- A few short answer questions

The deadline for Mercatus Center MA Fellowship Program applications is February 15, 2024, for the academic year 2024–2025.
