Fully Funded SBW Berlin Scholarship in Germany – No Application Fee

The SBW Berlin Scholarship is offered each year to young people from around the world who come from financially disadvantaged families and want to use the skills they learned in Germany to help long-term, non-profit projects, preferably in their home countries.

SBW awards bachelor’s and master’s degrees at universities and special universities of applied sciences in Berlin and Potsdam based on the student’s academic qualifications, personal aptitude, and social needs. In general, funding is available for all scientific and artistic disciplines.

Scholarship recipients are expected to return to their home countries after successfully completing their studies to continue working on their projects and to put the skills and knowledge they gained in Berlin into practice.

Benefits of the SBW Berlin Scholarship

SBW Berlin covers the scholarship recipients’ necessary living expenses for the duration of the scholarship (maximum funding period equals the regular study period). The scholarship includes the following items:

  • a room in shared student flats in Berlin
  • cost-of-living allowance
  • tuition fees
  • A travel allowance may also be provided for your trip to Berlin before the start of your studies and your return trip home after you have completed your studies.

Who can apply for the SBW Berlin Scholarship?

  • Foreign nationals whose home countries appear to have a particular need for development assistance
  • Homeless foreigners
  • Recognized refugees
  • Holders of a settlement permit
  • Holders of an EU long-term residence permit
  • Students from EU and EEA countries who have already worked in Germany in an activity
  • related to their studies before taking up their studies
  • Students from EU/EEA countries with a permanent right of residence as defined by the Freedom of Movement Act (Freizügigkeitsgesetz EU)

Application Requirements

Applicants must meet the following requirements to apply for the SBW Berlin Scholarship:

  • between 18 and 30 years old
  • professional or volunteer experience in the non-profit sector
  • strong intention to work in their country of origin for at least 18 months after graduation
  • able to prove a relatively low net income
  • no first-degree family members who reside permanently in Germany
  • able to prove that they had not stayed in Germany for more than 18 months before the application
  • average grades corresponding to a German grade point average of at least 2.0
  • application before the start of their university education or fully enrolled in the first, second, or max. third semester at a state-recognized university (in Germany or abroad) or application for a master’s degree shortly before or after obtaining a bachelor’s degree
  • after completing the study program, the scholarship recipient has to return to his or her home country and work for at least 18 months.

You need not be accepted to a university before applying to SBW Berlin. However, if you haven’t already, you should consider submitting your university application soon after.

Language Requirement

Applicants are not required to speak German. They must, however, be fluent in English. To pursue a bachelor’s or master’s degree, applicants must meet the language requirements of a specific program/university in Berlin or Potsdam. Only during the verification process is an official language certificate required. Only applicants who have been invited to a personal interview/videoconference and have passed the interview will be required to submit official language certificates (in English or German).

Application Timeline

The applications for the SBW Berlin Scholarship can only be submitted between the 15th of May and the 30th of June and the 15th of November and the 31st of December.

Documents Required for SBW Berlin Scholarship

Only fully completed applications will be considered. Applicants must provide the following documents for the SBW Berlin Scholarship:

  • application form (fillable PDF or online form)
  • letter of motivation (one or two pages long)
  • current curriculum vitae
  • information about the net household income
  • copy of last school or university transcript, including grade point average and grading scale,
  • copy of the highest academic degree, including grade point average and grading scale

Each year, application documents can only be submitted between the 15th of November, the 31st of December, the 15th of May, and the 30th of June.
