The University of Alberta Global Citizen Scholarship for IB Diploma International Students

Students entering their first year of an undergraduate degree program from Aga Khan Academies operating under the AKA agency of the Aga Khan Development Network, who will be studying in Canada on a Student Visa Permit, could receive up to $53,000 per year for a maximum of 4 years if they have excellent academic standing, a strong International Baccalaureate Diploma academic standing, demonstrated financial need, and demonstrated leadership. President’s International Distinction Scholarship

Students who enter their first year of undergraduate study on a student visa permit and have strong leadership characteristics may be eligible for up to $120,000 CAD (payable over 4 years).

Transfer scholarships

We want to make your decision to attend the University of Alberta worthwhile. Several scholarships are available for students starting professional programs or transferring from another post-secondary institution. Uncertain about the scholarships for which you may qualify? Applications are required for all professional admission and transfer scholarships. Before you apply for any transfer scholarships, you must apply to a bachelor’s degree program. Before applying, you do not need to wait for an admissions offer.

Graduate Scholarships at the University of Alberta

For graduate students, both domestic and foreign, the University of Alberta in Canada provides a selection of scholarships, awards, and financial possibilities. These options can support students in pursuing their master’s or doctoral degrees without having to worry about their finances too much.

1. The University of Alberta Graduate Entrance Scholarship

This scholarship is intended to provide funding and support to newly admitted graduate students who were highly ranked in their department at the time of admission.

Benefits

  • Master’s stipend: $17,500; Doctoral stipend: $21,000
  • To help cover fees, domestic students will receive an additional $7,100, while international students will receive an additional $10,000.

Eligibility

The following terms are eligible for admission: January 2023, May 2023, July 2023, and September 2023.

  • Must be a newly admitted master’s or doctoral student in one of the above terms.
  • Available to both domestic and international students
  • Available to course or thesis students
  • An admission GPA of 3.7 or higher is required.
  • Must be enrolled full-time during the duration of the award (Note: This award is payable in September 2023 regardless of the admit term of the student)

2. Alberta Graduate Excellence Scholarship

The new Alberta Graduate Excellence Scholarship recognizes outstanding academic achievement among Alberta graduate students.

Benefits

The scholarship at the University of Alberta is worth $12,000 and is paid out in one lump sum to the recipient. A student is only eligible for one Alberta Graduate Excellence Scholarship per year, and these awards are not renewable.

  • Must be a newly admitted master’s or doctoral student.
  • Available to both domestic and international students
  • Available to course or thesis students
  • An admission GPA of 3.7 or higher is required.
  • Must be enrolled full-time during the duration of the award

How to Apply

Students must be nominated by their home department to be considered for FGSR; students cannot apply online through the GSMS Awards Portal. Students wishing to apply for the Alberta Graduate Excellence Scholarship (AGES) must complete the Alberta Graduate Excellence Scholarship (AGES) Student Declaration form and submit it to their home department by the deadline specified by their department.

3. University of Alberta Graduate Recruitment Scholarship

The Recruitment Scholarship is designed to attract outstanding graduate students who have the potential to contribute to the University of Alberta’s community and research.

Benefits

Scholarships will be awarded in $5,000 increments. The department may decide how many $5,000 increments to offer a student. The award value varies and is specified in the original offer letter.

Eligibility

  • Students enrolled in doctoral or master’s thesis-based programs are eligible if they meet all other requirements. Students enrolled in course-based graduate programs are ineligible.
  • Available to both domestic and international students
  • An admission GPA of 3.5 or higher is required.
  • Will be enrolled full-time in a doctoral or master’s degree program with a thesis.

The following are the nomination deadlines based on start dates:

  • The deadline for students starting on May 1, 2023, is March 31, 2023.
  • The deadline for students starting on July 1, 2023, is May 31, 2023.

  • The deadline for students starting on January 1, 2024, is November 15, 2023.
