The following are the benefits of the MEXT Research Scholarship Program:

Allowances:

Payment for the following sums is required based on the course you are enrolled in. For grantees studying or conducting research in specifically designated regions, a monthly extra-regional stipend of 2,000 yen or 3,000 yen will be added to the scholarship amount. The amount of payment could vary every fiscal year due to the state of the Japanese government’s budget. A grantee’s scholarship will be suspended if they are away from the university for a prolonged length of time.

  • The monthly payment for preparatory education recipients and non-regular students: is 143,000 yen
  • Monthly tuition for regular students pursuing a master’s or professional degree is 144,000 yen.
  • The monthly tuition for regular doctoral students is 145,000 yen.

Education Fees:

MEXT will cover the cost of tuition, matriculation, and entrance exams for universities. However, if the grantees are unable to continue to the master’s or doctorate program or are not admitted by the university, they will be responsible for paying the entrance examination price.

Traveling Expenses:

MEXT gives an airline ticket to recipients who will arrive in Japan during the stipulated period, and it specifies the travel schedule and route. For the journey from the international airport nearest to the grantee’s residence (i.e., the country of nationality) to an international airport in Japan utilized on the regular route to the accepting university, an economy-class ticket will be provided by the airline.

MEXT will give grantees an airline ticket based on their application if they graduate from the accepting university and return home by the end of the last month of the MEXT-designated scholarship period.
